SAINT-JACQUES AND CHARTRES

In March, the town of Villard-de-Lans celebrates scallops with a gastronomic festival.

The name of this mollusk is due to a practice of pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela. When they arrived on Spanish beaches, pilgrims collected shells to hang them on their clothes and thus prove that they had completed the pilgrimage to the end. They also used it for drinking or eating.

Thus, shellfish has become a delicacy of French gastronomy.

Its link with the city of Chartres?

Chartres was a place of pilgrimage on the way to Santiago de Compostela.

There is a Gothic cathedral decorated with 172 stained glass windows and old quarters dating from the Middle Ages.
