THE ISLAND OF THE CITY
The Island of the City, the historic heart of Paris, is one of the cradles of the city. Located on the Seine, it is home to several emblematic monuments, but the most famous of them is undoubtedly the majestic Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, Notre-Dame was started in the 12th century and completed in the 14th century. Its spectacular rose windows, mysterious gargoyles and imposing towers make it a world heritage gem. Currently under renovation following a fire in 2019, Notre-Dame should reopen its doors to the public by the end of this year 2024. | The Island of the City, in addition to Notre-Dame, also hosts the Sainte-Chapelle, renowned for its dazzling stained glass windows, and the Conciergerie, a former prison of the French Revolution. Walking on this island is like traveling through the centuries, from the origins of Paris to today. The tree-lined quays and charming little streets offer a haven of peace in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Paris, making this place a must for any history and architecture lover. |
