CALAIS DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
During the First World War, Calais played a major strategic role as a vital port for Allied British troops. Located near England, the city served as a transit point for soldiers and equipment to the front. The surroundings of Calais saw the installation of military camps and field hospitals to treat the wounded, profoundly impacting the region.  Despite the bombings and air raids, the resilience of the inhabitants of Calais made it possible to maintain this city as an essential bastion for the Allies. | Today, Calais is also known for its cultural heritage, notably the City of Lace and Fashion.  This museum, housed in a former factory, demonstrates the historical importance of the lace industry and its impact on the city. A visit to the City of Lace offers a fascinating perspective on the evolution and reinvention of this traditional craft. |
